News & Events: Student Presentation and Awards Ceremony

The Professional Program in Biotechnology (PPiB) hosted its Student Presentation and Awards Ceremony on April 19 at the National Center for Therapeutics Manufacturing. The event was moderated by Mehak Gupta, a first year PPiB student.

In the first segment of the event, nine second-year PPiB students shared their Summer 2012 internship experiences with the first-year students and faculty in attendance. Student internship projects ranged from market research and project management on the business side of biotechnology, to assay development and upstream manufacturing on the research side. “What I have learnt from this program goes much beyond my internship experience,” said Ms. Yamini Tare who interned at Caliber Biotherapeutics in Bryan, Texas.  Companies where students completed their internship projects include MD Anderson Institute for Applied Cancer Science, Pfizer, Thar Pharmaceuticals, Caliber Biotherapeutics, TAMUS Office of Strategic Initiatives, and TAMU Synthetic and Systems Biology Innovation Hub (Department of Plant Pathology and Microbiology).

Following the presentations, PPiB program coordinator Ms. Marian Cothran recognized several first-year students who had accepted internship positions for Summer 2013. “About half of the first-year class already has internship offers for this summer and others will be hearing back from companies in the next two weeks,” she said. Students will work on a variety of projects including marketing of research equipment, bioinformatics, project management, research and development, and market analysis and creation of business plans for companies. “It was great to hear from the second-year students not only about their internships but also the tidbits of advice they had to offer us. I am definitely excited to start my internship and gain that new experience too,” said Ms. Alexandra Bourgis, a first-year student.

In the next segment, Ms. Marian Cothran recognized two students, Ms. Smriti Shankar who was awarded the ‘Continuing Student Scholarship’ and Ms. Sakshi Gupta, who was awarded the ‘Eppright Outstanding International Student Award.’ She also acknowledged PPiB students who had served in a variety of leadership roles during the 2012-2013 academic year, including the Biotechnology Society and Advisory Council Conferences. Four first-year students, Mr. Kamran Abbas, Ms. Alexandra Bourgis, Ms. Shubhagata Das and Ms. Unnati Dev were awarded the Outstanding First-Year Award and Mr. Vineet Bhambhani was presented the Outstanding Graduate Award. “I am proud of all graduating students. They are all very hard-working and I would like to wish them all the best in life,” said Dr. Maria King.
